Green Spaces or Playstations?

by Christine McLaughlin
Communal play areas are great for kids’ social development; they learn about teamwork and cooperation, turn taking and conflict resolution. What’s more they allow kids to exercise and use their imagination to come up with new games in a safe environment. So why have Trafford Council allowed United Utilities to hijack one of the few open spaces where children can play in Flixton?
The residents of Snowden Avenue were dismayed when it came to light that our council had leased land on their green space to United Utilities, who plan to build an electricity substation. For the tiny sum of £1000, this giant company has been granted a 60 year lease.
Although residents have discovered legal covenants that clearly restrict any building on the green, and although Trafford Council have admitted that the land was leased ‘in error’, United Utilities have refused to site the substation elsewhere.
So where should the children of Snowden Avenue play? It’s too dangerous to play in the street because of all the cars – a situation which is unlikely to improve given the gradual dismantling of the train service in the area and barely-there bus service.  Given that many children clock up over five hours screen time each day, outdoor play is surely to be encouraged.
The residents of Snowden Avenue are fighting a spirited and extremely well-organised campaign to save the open space, but they urgently need legal advice and funding. If you can help or would like to get involved in the campaign in any way, please contact Julie Chesworth at j.chesworth277@btinternet.com.

  1. I'd imagine that the thing most likely to get Trafford council or United Utilities to change their minds would be bad publicity. Have you tried getting your local paper (or even the Manchester Evening News) onside in your campaign?

  2. Could United Utilities spend a bit more money and site the sub station somewhere less of a problem to local residents? fighting this has probably cost them more. Maybe if you let the children burn off some energy playing in your nearest United Utilities office they may understand the need for a play area!

  6. Thanks to everyone for your comments. Nick, the Stretford and Urmston Messenger have been very supportive - it's even made the front page. Andrea, I'm sure the green is not the only possible location for the substation. You're quite right: we should have a kiddies sit-in in UU's offices! Everyone else: I couldn't agree more!

  9. IF TBC HAVE LEASED THIS PIECE OF LAND IN ERROR, SURELY THEY MUST DO A 'U' TURN WITH UU. I DOUBT THAT THE COUNCIL WOULD HAVE LEASED THE LAND TO THE RESIDENTS FOR THE PALTRY SUM OF £1000.
SPINELESS COUNCILLORS HAVE DONE THIS. THEY HAVE NOT GOT THE GUTS TO SHOW THEIR FACES ON FRONT PAGE OF PAPER SO WE WILL KNOW WHO NOT TO VOTE FOR IN FUTURE

  29. When something looks to good to be true ... it usually is to good to be true and unfortunately, that appears to be the case at the moment.

We now understand that UU do intend at some time in the future to come back with a smaller substation. True to form, neither UU nor the Council have made any effort to advise residents beforehand that the removal of the substation and, shortly, the concrete base is not the end of the matter.

Poor communication, insensitive approach and a complete lack of respect and understanding of residents views and concerns. These are well known trademark characteristics of big business but we expected more from the Council that we elected ...

Our fight continues as before. We really do not want any substation, no matter what size, being installed in the middle of a scenic children's play area, today tomorrow or ever ...

  58. Yet another plagiarism announcement We've received yet another takedown request from a publisher's legal department about a story that was copied from a book and posted on this site. The plagiarizer changed the names in the story but otherwise left the original story wordings intact. The plagiarizer also added attributions to the original author and other disclaimers thinking it would shield themselves from any liability. It does not. I just want to reiterate that we do not allow plagiarism of any kind here on Asianfanfics. claw foot tub faucetsONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED
