No Mega-Tesco Meeting: Monday, 28th September 2009

by Christine McLaughlin

Supermarket chain Tesco seems to be staging something of a coup across the whole of the UK. Over the last decade its distinctive logo has claimed ever larger territories across our retail sector. Now in its sights, as I've previously blogged, is Old Trafford, specifically Lancashire County Cricket Ground.

Margaret Westbrook and I went out leafleting against this retail rampage in Gorse Hill on Saturday morning. I should say that other TGP members were out leafleting this weekend and probably delivered more than me as I had my two year old with me and he works pretty effectively as a ball and chain. Margaret was pretty zippy and delivered a ton of leaflets whilst animatedly explaining to various passersby why they should get involved in the campaign.

We were trying to get people to come to a public meeting at 7.30 pm on Monday, 28th September at Gorse Hill United Church -entrance on Wesley Street just off A56/ Chester Road in Gorse Hill, postcode M32 0GL. It would be a pun too far to say we were bowled over by the enthusiastic response to our campaign so I'll simply say it was pretty clear to all of us that the people of Gorse Hill do not want a Mega-Tesco on their doorstep.

I only managed to find one person to disagree with when I (politely) accosted what I took to be a Guardian reader on the street, but in spite of his beard and corduroy jacket, the newspaper tucked under his arm turned out to be the Telegraph and he was an ardent fan of Tesco. He didn't live in the area, but it's always good to find out why people hold opposing points of view so we had a chat all the same and he explained he loved Tesco because, "We buy everything there." No doubt he hadn't noticed his local independent retailers closing one by one, nor had he thought about reducing food miles, carbon emissions and keeping money and jobs in the local area. He hadn't considered whether he bought everything in Tesco because he wanted to or because he had to. He took a leaflet anyway and promised to look at the campaign's website.

Everyone is welcome at the meeting. The main aim is to organise the campaign against the Mega-Tesco, but it's also an opportunity to gather information. The leaflets we were distributing were printed by Keep Chorlton Interesting and the meeting and campaign are a collaborative effort between more than one group. Maybe see you there?

  1. Secondly, there are a lot of well- paid job that do not require the degree. It is logically that the more you learn in university, the more opportunity you get in job. However, it is not prove that if you get the degree, you will have a good job and be successful. A lot of jobs require people skills and talents to follow thoseroll up banner standsunderground water tank
