I attended one of the Neighbourhood Forums last week on the possible fluoridation of our water supply. The Strategic Health Authority (SHA) has been looking at ways of doing this and has asked all Greater Manchester Councils for some feedback. Trafford has covered the issue at recent forums and the response from attendees has been overwhelmingly against – it was 90% at the one I went to and this was apparently typical.
Adding fluoride to our water amounts to mass medication rather than targeting those in need. I believe that fluoridated water is not beneficial for the majority of us and actually may be harmful – get googling if you want to find out more. Improving diet and dental hygiene is a far better way of protecting our children’s teeth. Most of Europe has now stopped this practice and yet there seems to be an agenda to spread the amount of water fluoridated in Britain and Manchester may be next.
It’s probably not too late to let the Council know your views - email Cllr John Smith at John.Smith@trafford.gov.uk – and I hope that the SHA undertake a fair public consultation before taking a decision on this. If they do, judging by the Trafford forums, we should give them a resounding no!
